The best test prep for the SAT or ACT usually takes place over a period of at least six weeks. However, there are things you can do over winter break to make your SAT and ACT process easier and more effective when classes resume in January, particularly if your school workload is light over the break. Invest time into your test prep now, and your future self will thank you! Below, I’ve listed a few suggestions for what to do, from low demand to high demand, based on your level of ambition and how much time you have available to spend on test prep. I've used my One Month Prep Plans as a reference. The One Month Prep Plans are available as free PDF downloads when you sign up for email updates. Option 1: Low Demand Read for one hour a day from a high quality book or periodical without your phone nearby. Hopefully, you’ll come to find this pleasant and relaxing, but it’s also an opportunity to build your attention “muscles,” which you’ll need in order to get through a test that lasts over three hours! Additionally, consider your test prep options. If you know how you want to proceed with your test prep, that's great. If not, read Chapter One of my book, Acing It! A Mindful Guide to Maximum Results on Your College Admissions Test, under the section “Test Prep Options” for a review of the most popular ways that students approach the test prep process. Like the One Month Prep Plans, Chapter One of Acing It! is available as a free PDF download when you sign up for email updates. If you know you want to work with a tutor or take a class, take this time to research options and set up a consultation. The sooner you connect with a tutor you want to work with, the higher the likelihood that the tutor will have availability at a time that works with your schedule. If you’re interested in working with me on your SAT or ACT prep, the first step is for me to talk with your parent(s). Your parent can set up a consultation here. Option 2: Medium Demand Do Week One or Week One and Week Two of the One Month Prep Plans. This will give you a chance to choose between the SAT and ACT—if you haven’t already—and begin reviewing the academic content that’s tested on the SAT or ACT. You may also read for an hour a day and consider your test prep options as in Option 1, above. Option 3: High Demand Do Weeks One through Three of the One Month Prep Plans. This gives you a chance to do more review of the academic content and to challenge yourself with a second full practice test. You may also read for an hour a day and consider your test prep options as in Option 1, above. Enhance Any Plan: Read Acing It! A Mindful Guide to Maximum Results on Your College Admissions Test. Best wishes for the holiday season and new year! Sign up for email updates, and I'll let you know when I post something new to the blog.
