Maintain A Sense of Humor

Whenever possible, maintain a sense of humor.

Yes, we know the test prep process is very serious. Your future depends on it.

You've probably repeated that sentiment to yourself more times than you can count. You've also heard it from your parents, your teachers, your college counselors, your friends... oh yeah, and tutors (like me). We all know the test prep process is serious.

So what? Does that mean that you can't have a little fun with it? That you can't laugh a little? Absolutely not. In fact, infusing the test prep process with a little fun and lightness will probably make it easier, more enjoyable, and make you more effective.

Involve a friend. Crack a joke. Draw a funny face on the cover of your prep book. Do a handstand in between practice sections. Put on "Shake it Out" by Florence and the Machine and literally shake it out for a few minutes. Make a list of all the reasons why this process is really ridiculous (my brother—now in med school—put on a nice impromptu comedy routine about all the stress incurred by filling out a bubble sheet at dinner the other night). While you are taking your next practice section, if you come across a problem that stumps you, laugh. Seriously! Stop working for a few seconds and have a good laugh. At least smile. Then, move on. There: don't you feel better?

Yes, we know this process is serious. But it doesn't have to be THAT serious.
