If you're investing time in your test prep, it's because the results of your SAT or ACT matter to you. You want to set yourself up for a happy result in the college admissions process. You want to go to a school you're excited to attend. You want to earn scholarship money so that you have fewer student loans in the future. Whatever your reasons, time invested in high-quality test prep is a vote for yourself and your future.
Similarly, time invested into activism, volunteering, friendships, family, creativity... are votes for those things. Any time you spend doing one thing is time you're not spending doing something else. It's always a choice. It's always a vote. While it's an unrealistic bar to expect anyone to be intentional with all 24 hours in his or her day, what if you observed how you spent your time today or tomorrow? What if you looked at how you invest your time and asked yourself if that's a thing you want to "vote" for? Is it nourishing you, your relationships, community, country, or world? Ultimately, this is an mindfulness exercise, heightening your awareness of how you spend your time and attention. Through first building this awareness and then acting in accordance with it, you will have the capacity to powerfully improve your life and your world. BONUS POINTS: Find one high-quality article to read about Tuesday's election or a political issue. Keep reading all the way through—don't stop to check your phone or stare into space or switch articles. If it's an opinion piece as opposed to reporting, try to get a sense of how the author crafts his or her argument. It's good practice for the Reading and essay sections! P.S.
